Gallops Island:

Gallups Island Radio Association Preamble:
This is (call sign)  net control for the Gallups Island Radio Association Net. We are keeping alive the spirit of the men of the maritime service who were trained at the Gallups Island radio school which was formerly located in Boston Harbor. These men went on to honorably serve our country during WWII and beyond. The maritime service was the supply life-line for our men fighting in every theater. Many of these men paid the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. They are the original founders of the Gallup Island net, and it is in remembrance of them that we carry their love of radio forward through the continuation of this morning net. Good Morning to all hands!

This is a picture of Gallops Island in the background, taken from George's Island.  Gallops Island can no longer be visited, but there are regularly scheduled boats to George's Island and other of the Boston Harbor Islands.

This book describes the Gallops Island Radio School.

Notes: Ships I served on; SS Floyd W. Spence YAG36 (Liberty Ship #2802, made possible by the war bound purchases of the people of the state of Louisiana *), and the USS Wipe Stock YO-49 (Yard Oiler). Both ships were operating in Tokyo Bay, out of Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan.

Liberty Ship: 441 feet long, 56 feet wide, 2,500 hp, speed 11 knots.

*Civic groups that raised $2 million in war bond purchases could name a ship.
